how do i connect my sandisk sansa clip to my computer?

i have a 2GB sansa sandisk clip, a pink one. doesnt seem to work when i connect it to the UBS cord. it says on my mp3 it is connecting.. and writing... and it even 'dings' when i connect it. but i cant put songs on it if it isnt familiar on my computer!
