How do I connect my playstation 3 to my JVC TH-G40 surround sound using an optical connection?

I connected the cable into the optical in/outputs to both the ps3 and reciever. Not sure what to select under sound settings to make sound come out of speakers. Also, the optical cable doesnt feel like it connects in all the way and I dont want to force it and break it.

i have 3 identical jvc 27" av27d502 tvs that turn off as soon as sound and pic come on.whats wrong?
